Turner, Alexandra (Lexi)

Alexandra (Lexi) Turner

I have spent my career working in the nonprofit sector in the fields of community development and affordable housing, starting here in Boston and then nationally for the past 30 years. I have a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Tufts University, and currently live in Newton.

With SOAR, I have been able to bring my nonprofit management experience back to local non-profits in the area.  I really valued the training that SOAR offers consultants, which gave us a shared consulting methodology, encouraged a growth mindset with our client engagements, and was a fun and stimulating way to meet other consulting volunteers.

I have had opportunity to work on three projects so far, and have enjoyed building relationships with fellow consultants, learning the work of the client organizations, and helping them achieve their goals. I especially enjoyed my SOAR project consulting to RIA House – a young organization that is growing quickly and having a real and immediate impact – to develop a strategic plan. I am currently on a team consulting to Horizons at Dedham Country Day, a summer learning and enrichment program for children in the Boston and Dedham public schools, on an expansion initiative and a strategic plan.

I continue to work part-time in addition to my SOAR consulting. I enjoy the variety and the opportunity to connect with colleagues who have different backgrounds and experiences.

Wertheimer, Janet

I have over 25 years of experience as a senior manager with leading financial services and consulting organizations.   Working for Fortune 500 companies, such as State Street Corporation and PNC Financial Services, I developed strategic business plans, and implemented sales, marketing and customer service programs. With a focus on strategic business development, I designed marketing programs ranging from the successful development and launch of a corporate Consultant Relations program, spanning over 150 consultants, to building and managing a Client Service organization servicing over 100 clients. I developed products for the institutional marketplace that both expanded product mix and distribution channels for clients. As a successful sales and relationship management professional, I also managed corporate relationship programs, helping customers control costs, manage risk and launch competitive new investment products.

While working primarily in the private sector, I began my career consulting for Abt Associates on government funded program evaluations.  With a background in child development and education, I consulted on a range of national evaluations of child-care and public school programs.

I received an M.B.A. from Simmons College in Boston, M.A., a MA in Educational Psychology from UCLA, and a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT.

I managed technology teams in the Financial Services industry whose members were located all over the world. I brought my expertise in operations management, project management and technology to my SOAR work consulting to Stearns Farm in Framingham on market research and a business plan, and Newton Community Farm on organizational development. I am also doing succession plan consulting to Camp Jabberwocky that provides lifelong camping opportunities to individuals with special needs. SOAR not only allows me to give back to my community, but has enriched my life with new friendships made through my orientation sessions and consulting experiences.

I was looking for a volunteer opportunity that would allow me to leverage my corporate skills. The SOAR Management Consulting program was a perfect fit for me with the combination of training and client assignments. I also had a unique opportunity to help SOAR with its Strategic Plan.

To anyone that is interested in finding a professional, intellectually challenging volunteer position, I would suggest SOAR. You meet interesting people from a broad range of backgrounds, SOAR provides continuing education opportunities and fun social events, and you are able to leverage your skills in the nonprofit space, helping clients become more successful and effective in helping the communities that they serve.

Dolan, Simon

I have many years of senior general management experience, in both growth and turnaround situations, with particular expertise in strategic planning. Most recently, I was Senior Vice President and General Manager of a $100-200M Business Unit, owned by a succession of public companies, developing and providing embedded software and semiconductor solutions to printer, copier and camera manufacturers in the US and Asia.

My SOAR projects have included consulting to Newton Community Education and Bay Path Elder Services. We worked with Newton Community Education as they refreshed their mission and vision and adult education programs and with Bay Path Elder Services to develop a strategic plan. The projects had a similar focus, yet were very different as they were organizations with very different missions, in different stages of operational planning.

Having retired early, I was looking both for ways to replace the intellectual stimulus of  my professional life as well as an opportunity to do some good in the world – SOAR seemed like a great opportunity to achieve both goals at the same time.

SOAR’s professional development helped me translate my corporate experience to the nonprofit sector. The rewarding experience I have had in the two projects I have undertaken for SOAR has prompted me to join the SOAR Board, where I will be a part of expanding our organization to create a positive impact for our clients and a meaningful and fulfilling experience for our consultants.

I’m an engineer with experience developing commercial products and leading large teams of scientists performing advanced research and development. My area of expertise is operations and I currently live in Somerville. For SOAR, I was the project coordinator for a consultation with Parent Talk in Needham reviewing and updating their By-laws, and I was the project coordinator for a team developing a market survey in collaboration with East Boston Social Centers.

My favorite part is working in a team of three SOAR consultants, each contributing different skills and perspectives. I’ve served on non-profit Boards before, and SOAR exposes me to a broad variety of organizations, each with different needs and challenges.  I love the flexibility that allows me to choose when I want to sign up for a project, making it a professionally rewarding activity that fits well with my current lifestyle.

My area of specialty is nonprofit management and have I extensive experience in finance, marketing and communications. I’m fluent in Spanish and have a MBA degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management.  Over my career at a major international development organization as well as a small non-profit, I hired scores of individual consultants to address management challenges in my own and other organizations. Working with SOAR Management Consulting Group, I am now one of those consultants.

Since joining SOAR I’ve consulted to the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham on a competitive market analysis. For the Multicultural Coalition on Aging, our team analyzed organizational options for the future. I also serve SOAR itself on the Client Relations Committee.

It’s very satisfying to work closely with SOAR clients, getting to know the details of what makes them tick, and helping them define viable, realistic options to improve their impact in the community. I’ve also gotten to know other consultants who are smart, accomplished people who challenge my thinking and are fun to work with.
